“Shelter” Original Oil Painting
545€
Shelter is a tender tribute to Black love, its depth, its strength, and its quiet, unspoken warmth. In the foreground, a couple stands close, the woman embracing the man from behind, her head resting gently against his back. Their posture speaks of trust, comfort, and the kind of love that feels like home.
But the image also holds a deeper resonance. Throughout history, Black families have been torn apart by the transatlantic slave trade, by systemic incarceration of Black men, by policies and narratives that erased the presence of strong Black fathers and replaced them with harmful stereotypes. Black women were often left to raise children alone, carrying the weight of survival while navigating a world stacked against them. Society even pushed the idea that Black men should seek white partners, while mixed couples, also in places like the Netherlands, faced their own walls of racism and exclusion.
Against this backdrop, Black love becomes an act of healing, of reclamation. In the abstract green background, lush and alive, Shelter mirrors love’s fluidity and growth. It is rooted in history yet reaching toward a future where love remains a safe and sacred place.
